Poetry

O’Connell Street

Francis Ledwidge
Translated by Gabriel Rosenstock

A Noble failure is not vainAn teip Uasal, ní raghaidh amú
But hath a victory of its ownA bua féin aici, is léir
A bright delectance from the slainTagann aoibhneas ó ghlúin go glúin
Is down the generations thrown.Anuas chugainn ó ré go ré.
And, more than Beauty understandsAn Áilleacht féin gan tuiscint tá,
Has made her lovelier here, it seems; Is gleoite í anseo ba dhóigh leat:
I see white ships that crowd her strands,Longa bána thíos cois trá
For mine are all the dead men’s dreams.Na mairbh is a mbrionglóidí.
