Important role of the People’s Movement in the referendum campaign

The contribution of the People’s Movement to the No forces was immeasurable. Its activists delivered 300,000 leaflets and other materials to tens of thousands of homes around the country. Thousands of posters were put up by dozens of volunteers. Around the country People’s Movement speakers addressed dozens of public meetings, many organised by the People’s Movement itself.
Throughout the campaign the movement attempted to publicise not only its critique of the permanent austerity treaty but also the dangers to democracy and to the people’s sovereignty posed by the European Stability Mechanism Treaty, which the government is quietly attempting to slip unnoticed through the Dáil.
On a very small budget, the People’s Movement managed to draw democratic and patriotic-minded forces together. It has laid a good base for a possible referendum on the ESM Treaty later this year.
It was also able to draw together trade unions and trade union activists as well as a number of independent public representative, both national and local.
