TEEU strategic action rolls on!

Following the threatened national dispute in the electrical contracting industry that prevented, once again, an attempt to cut the wages of electricians, the Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union has employed significant resources to sustain the terms of the National Collective Agreement, formally registered with the Labour Court.
The TEEU identified 280 electrical contractors in the electrical contracting industry that employ numbers of electricians. It engaged in a mapping exercise in the industry on a regional basis, identifying compliant contractors, non-compliant contractors, and employment agencies (both compliant and non-compliant). They systematically worked their way through these companies while taking into account the views expressed by their representative bodies, the ECA and AECI.
A substantial number of these employers have now had compliance visits or have visited the TEEU in response to correspondence sent to them and have proved their compliance.
The TEEU is now pursuing each contractor on a site-by-site basis. Thirty-one of these companies have since become compliant, following joint pressure from both the TEEU, which has threatened direct action, and their clients, who were anxious to avoid pickets on their sites.
Pickets have been placed on the Department of Education and Skills construction site at Grangegorman, Dublin, to highlight the use of agency workers being paid as little as €14 per hour, with no travelling time, sick pay, pension or mortality benefit and to have dismissed electricians reinstated.
Protest pickets were also placed on St Patrick’s College, another Department of Education and Skills construction site, where it was reported that electricians were being paid €15 per hour by Cosgrove Electrical Services Ltd, with no application of travelling time, sick pay, pension, or mortality benefit.
These strategic strikes will continue to rid our industry of non- compliance with our National Collective Agreement, formally registered with the Labour Court.
If you are aware of non-compliance anywhere in the electrical contracting industry, phone the TEEU 24-hour confidential telephone line, (01) 8719903, or e-mail info@teeu.ie.
