Camp Havana, Gleann Cholm Cille |
| On the weekend of 18 September the call for solidarity with the Miami Five—Cuban political prisoners—and support for Cuba generally was very positive. I was one of the ones that did the sponsored walk up Slieve League on that Saturday, along with a group of people, mostly Irish, from Dublin, Armagh, Fermanagh, Belfast, Sligo, Galway, Derry, Dungiven, and Donegal, and a few from near and far distant shores.
The walk was easier for some than others, but still we all made the effort up the incline, in spite of the wind and the mist. The itinerary, both before the walk and after, included pub music, singing and dancing in Carrick and Gleann, culminating on Saturday night with salsa dancing and talented young fifteen-year-olds, the “Domino Effect,” who came all the way from Dungiven to show their support for Cuba. Sunday concluded with a roam around Gleann. The Cuban ambassador, Teresita Trujillo, was with us on the Saturday night, and the film about the Miami Five was shown to an audience of about seventy people. The event raised awareness and money and consolidated support for the Cuban people. Congratulations to those who proposed and organised the event, Marion Baur and Bill from Gleann. [LW] |
