Martin O’Hagan inquest
Martin O’Hagan’s inquest began in Armagh on Tuesday 19 December. A journalist who worked for the Sunday World, he was shot dead in Lurgan in 2001 while walking home with his wife. Nobody has ever been charged with his murder; however, connections with the Loyalist Volunteer Force have been made, especially because Martin O’Hagan wrote extensively about the LVF and its activities.
This week it was reported in the Irish News that the National Union of Journalists has said it is concerned about reports that the gunmen were police informers and are being protected to prevent them from exposing details of collusion. There is no doubt that an investigation into this murder and the role of the police is needed. Nobody has ever been charged with the murder, and the North’s Police Ombudsman has been asked to investigate the police inquiry. |
