Cuba visits Ireland

International women’s Day, the 8th of March, is a time to celebrate the gains that women have made and to look at the changes that are needed in order to improve economic and political interests. It is also a time to show solidarity with working-class women throughout the world.
This year the Communist Party of Ireland will be having a guest speaker from Cuba, Nancy Coro Aguiar, General Secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women, at their International Women’s Day events in Belfast and Dublin.
The meetings will be held on Thursday 6th of March in Liberty Hall, Dublin, and in Belfast on Saturday 7 March in the CPI premises, just off Donegall Street.
The CPI is inviting you to hear about the life of women in Cuba, and we will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution.
Nancy Coro Aguiar was born ten years after the Revolution in the province of Pinar del Río. She has experienced some of the hard times in Cuba and some very good times. As a child of the Revolution she went to university and from there went on to teach English in junior school. She has since worked as a full-time youth leader.
She headed a large number of youth delegations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe to hold exchanges at the governmental, political and social levels. In 2005 she was appointed representative of Cuba on the International Organising Committee for the 16th World Festival of Youth and Students, held in Venezuela. She is now the general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women.
She is also an active trade unionist, a member of the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution, and a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
While Nancy is in Ireland she will also visit Derry and Sligo, and she will speak at a number of meetings and meet community activists, trade unionists, and political parties.
She will be a guest at the ICTU Women’s Seminar in Belfast, and will speak on Saturday 7 March at the seminar.
