International Women’s Day Centenary, Brussels

by Lynda Walker

Organised by the Greek Communist Party (KKE), the Seminar of Communist and Workers' Parties on the Role of Communists in the Struggle for the Parity and Emancipation of Women was held on 26 March 2010. There were forty-three people in attendance, from twenty-four countries. This was in recognition of when the Second International Conference of Socialist Women adopted the proposal of the German revolutionary Clara Zetkin to hold an international day for working women a hundred years ago.
The seminar provided the participants with the opportunity to examine common positions and look at the ways of building the communist and progressive movement. The participants underlined the need to highlight the historical origins of radical women’s struggle, namely the communist movement and the theory of scientific socialism, and the importance of highlighting the historical achievements of women in socialist countries. Participants also called for a critical analysis of the development of policy and ideology within communist parties and the former socialist countries, and the need to develop Marxist ideology.
At the seminar Aleka Papariga from the KKE spoke about the position of women in Greece and drew attention to the problems relating to the development of policy and action within the KKE as well as achievements that have been made.
The seminar discussed the vital role of communists in the development and strengthening of the women’s movement and the need to start exchanging experiences in a more systematic way.
At such an event it is obvious that the effects of the role of the capitalist system, imperialism and the European Union were discussed in depth, in particular the continuing militarisation and war. Lynda Walker, National Chairperson of the Communist Party of Ireland, spoke about the conditions that women have experienced in Ireland, North and South, and the gains that have been made as well as the present-day struggle. She noted: “The crisis of capitalism provides us with an alternative to develop unity of the left through struggles on key social issues.”
The seminar passed solidarity resolutions with people in Cuba, Iran, Palestine, and Lebanon.
