EditorialChange desired in TunisiaThere is no doubt that the events in Tunisia will have a resounding effect far beyond its borders. The more despotic regimes of the Arab world will be nervous as to the outcome of the revolt, as will the imperialist powers and their allies in the region. We take note of the statement by the Communist Workers’ Party of Tunisia, in which they state that the success achieved so far is only half the way, and the other half is achieving the wanted democratic change. This democratic change will not be achieved by elements from the party, individuals, apparatus and legislature that maintained the dictatorship for more than half a century. The Communists quite rightly condemn the plan to hold presidential elections in sixty days’ time as having no purpose but to maintain the continuation of the dictatorial regime through one of its former leaders. They point out that the democratic change, with its political, economic, social and cultural dimensions, requires the real end of the repressive regime by taking direct steps, which consist of forming a provisional government or any other body that has executive powers and undertakes the task of organising free elections for a Constitutional Assembly which would establish the basis of a real democratic republic in which people would enjoy freedom, social equality, and national dignity. To this end they state that it is extremely urgent that the democratic forces form a national and unified body to carry out the democratic change. They warn that there is a danger that the Tunisian people could be robbed of their victory by forces of the previous regime who may now pose as democrats. Progressive forces throughout the world have to be vigilant against the forces of imperialism who would equally like to thwart the gains of the Tunisian people in order to preserve their influence in the region. We salute the Tunisian people, who have now become an inspiration to the rest of the Arab people. |
